Glass Tempering Process & Purpose

Glass tempering is a thermal process that creates a strong, permanent compressive stress layer on the surface of the glass. This is achieved by heating the glass to near its softening point and then rapidly cooling it. The resulting “pre-stressed” state significantly enhances the glass’s mechanical strength and thermal shock resistance. When broken, tempered glass fractures into small, relatively harmless granular pieces instead of sharp shards, ensuring safety. The primary reasons for tempering glass are to greatly improve its load-bearing capacity, impact resistance, and overall safety for applications in architecture, vehicles, and consumer products.

FAQ: Physical Glass Tempering

What is Physical Glass Tempering?
It is a thermal process that heats glass to a high temperature and then rapidly cools it. This creates a surface compressive stress layer, significantly increasing the glass’s strength and causing it to break into small, granular pieces for safety.
What are the main benefits of tempered glass?
The key benefits are:
Increased Strength: 4-5 times stronger than annealed glass.
Thermal Shock Resistance: Withstands much higher temperature differentials.
Safety: Breaks into small, less hazardous particles.
What are the size and shape limitations of your tempering services?
We handle both standard and complex shapes:
Flat Furnace: For flat glass and components with heights under 50mm.
Special-Shaped Furnace: For complex 3D parts up to 300mm in diameter and 300mm in height.
How do you ensure consistent quality for complex-shaped glass parts?
For non-standard geometries, we design and fabricate custom air duct connectors. This ensures uniform cooling during the tempering process, guaranteeing consistent strength and performance across the entire part.
What types of products typically require physical tempering?
Tempered glass is essential for safety and strength in applications like architectural windows and doors, vehicle side and rear windows, appliance panels, shower doors, security glass, and protective covers.
