Surface Lapping & Polishing

Precision lapping and polishing services to achieve superior surface flatness, parallelism, and finish for quartz, glass, and crystalline components.

Why do we need to grind and polish?

Grinding is a pivotal precision machining step that transforms rough glass into a high-tech component. It achieves exact thickness, parallelism, and flatness for non-standard specifications. Crucially, it removes sub-surface damage from prior cutting, creating a defect-free foundation that enhances mechanical strength and enables a perfect polish. The process also allows for creating complex shapes and ensures a contaminant-free surface, which is vital for yield in subsequent high-value processes like thin-film deposition and bonding.

Grinding and polishing

BO-GLASS uses multi-level grinding and ultra-precision polishing technology to provide a full-process solution for glass surfaces from micron-level flatness to sub-nanometer-level smoothness, serving the fields of optics, semiconductors, and high-end manufacturing.

Surface Lapping

Surface lapping is a precision machining process that uses a lap tool coated with abrasive material to grind the glass substrate. It effectively achieves the desired thickness and shape while removing sub-surface damage from previous manufacturing steps, such as sawing or cutting.

Polishing

Polishing is the critical final finishing step that perfects a surface after grinding. Using a soft polishing cloth or pad with a fine abrasive slurry, it meticulously removes micro-defects to achieve a nanometer-level smoothness. This process eliminates light scattering, creating an optically clear, flawless surface essential for high-performance applications in optics, semiconductors, and display technologies.

FAQ Precision Glass Grinding & Polishing Services

What level of thickness tolerance and flatness can you consistently achieve?

We routinely achieve tight tolerances, such as thickness tolerances within ±0.1mm and Total Thickness Variation (TTV) of less than 0.01 mm, ensuring superior parallelism and flatness for demanding applications.

How do you ensure the final surface quality and what roughness (Ra) can you deliver?
We utilize controlled grinding and multi-stage polishing processes to produce extremely smooth surfaces. For optical-grade surfaces, we can achieve surface roughness (Ra) values as low as 5 Å, and can specify precise Ra values according to your application requirements.
What is the largest substrate size you can handle?
Our processing capabilities can handle substrates with a maximum size of (please specify the maximum size, for example: 500 mm x 500 mm). For any specific size requirements, please contact us.
What types of glass materials can you process?

We have extensive experience with a wide range of materials, including Borosilicate (e.g., B270, D263), Fused Silica, Quartz, Soda-Lime, and aluminosilicate glasses (e.g., Gorilla Glass).

How do you manage and remove sub-surface damage (SSD) from the grinding process?

We employ a structured process using progressively finer abrasives during grinding to minimize SSD. A critical measure of our polishing step is to completely eliminate this damage layer, ensuring a pristine, defect-free surface.

What is your typical lead time for a prototype and production run?

Prototype lead times are typically [e.g., 2-4 weeks]. For production volumes, we provide schedule commitments based on order quantity and work with you to meet your project timeline.

Do you provide secondary services like cleaning, edge work, or inspection?

Yes. We offer a complete service package, including precision edge grinding/chamfering, ultrasonic cleaning, and 100% final inspection with certified reports for quality assurance.
