Design Guidelines for Lampworked Glass Components
To ensure optimal manufacturability and performance for your custom lampworked glass parts, please consider the following design recommendations:
Dimensional Tolerances
- Maintain dimensional tolerances ≥ ±0.2mm
- Keep angular tolerances ≥ ±0.5°
Thread Design
- Limit thread engagements to maximum 4 turns
- Excessive threads increase risk of binding with mating parts
Wall Thickness Size
- Ideal wall thickness: 0.8-2.0mm
- Maximum recommended diameter: 350mm
Internal Structures
- Maintain minimum 10mm clearance between internal surfaces
- Avoid complex internal geometries that may cause glass adhesion
Additional Recommendations
- Incorporate gradual transitions between different sections
- Avoid sharp corners – use radii ≥ 1.5mm
Design for uniform wall thickness distribution
- Consider adding alignment features for multi-part assemblies
- Specify critical dimensions clearly on technical drawings
FAQ’s about lampworking service
What tolerance standards do you guarantee?
Our lampworked glass components comply with ASTM E438 and ISO 4803 standards for borosilicate 3.3 glass. Standard tolerances include: diameter ±1.5-2.5%, wall thickness ±15-20%, length ±2mm (≤100mm) or ±2% (>100mm), roundness ≤1.5%. Geometrical tolerances as tight as ±0.2mm are achievable when specified. Contact our technicians for special requirements.
What are the minimum and maximum dimensions you can machine?
For spherical items, our maximum diameter is 350mm. Tubular components are limited to approximately 600mm in length due to equipment constraints.Wall thickness decreases as product size increases.
What cosmetic standards do you guarantee?
Our lampworking process uses premium borosilicate glass tubes to achieve a smooth, bubble-free surface. To minimize dust contamination, we maintain strict workshop cleanliness with controlled humidity. All raw materials are pre-screened, rejecting tubes with dark spots or impurities. Final inspection under bright light identifies and removes any units with chips, cracks, or inclusions, ensuring superior surface quality.
How much does your lampworking service cost?
Our lampworking service pricing is calculated systematically based on four key factors: product dimensions, process complexity, precision requirements, and production difficulty. With extensive experience manufacturing thousands of unique designs, we have established a comprehensive reference pricing system. For detailed costing, please consult with our technical team to discuss your specific project requirements.
How can I reduce the cost of my ampworked parts?
“The cost of lampworked components is primarily driven by four factors: production time, setup, materials, and feature complexity. To minimize costs:
Optimize designs for faster production by specifying suitable inner radii, reducing cavity depth, and using standard hole sizes.
Control material costs by considering blank size and selecting readily machinable glass types.
Minimize feature costs by applying tight tolerances only where critical, eliminating text/lettering, and avoiding multiple surface finishes.
Since lampworking relies on skilled artisans, higher order quantities significantly reduce cost through improved proficiency and yield. For detailed guidance, please refer to our complete design for manufacturability guide.”
How BO-GLASS Custom Lampworking Service Works
We begin by creating CAD models and quality specifications based on your requirements. Corresponding molds and fixtures are precision-made via CNC machining. Sample units are then produced for your dimensional and quality approval before mass production proceeds. Finally, we provide inspection reports and handle all shipping arrangements.
