Most people see a glass bulb shell as a simple cover. But for a premium lighting brand, it does much more than protect the bulb. It shapes the light, controls glare, softens hotspots, and helps define the final look of the fixture.
For decorative lighting used in hotels, restaurants, retail spaces, and corporate interiors, the bulb shell becomes part of the brand experience. If the glass is cloudy, the thread does not fit, or the color finish changes from batch to batch, the entire fixture can feel lower quality.
That is why MULLAN Lighting came to BO-Glass.
MULLAN Lighting, a premium European lighting brand based in Ireland, is known for handcrafted fixtures used in hospitality, commercial, and residential projects. They needed custom high-borosilicate glass bulb shells that could do more than cover the light source. The shells had to improve light diffusion, fit smoothly during assembly, maintain consistent color, and support the premium appearance of their lighting collections.

The Challenge
MULLAN had worked with bulb shell suppliers before, but each new order brought new problems.
Some glass shells had threads that were too tight, making assembly slow and difficult. Others were too loose, causing the shell to wobble after installation. For a lighting brand producing premium fixtures, poor thread fit was not just a technical issue. It affected assembly efficiency, product stability, and customer confidence.
Another problem appeared only after the light was turned on. Small bubbles, impurities, and internal defects hidden inside the glass became visible under illumination. These defects created dark spots and uneven light, ruining the clean, warm look MULLAN wanted for its fixtures.
Color consistency was also a major issue. Approved samples looked correct, but mass production batches often looked different. A warm white finish could turn slightly cool or bluish. Amber and colored finishes varied between batches. This made it difficult for MULLAN to maintain a consistent product appearance across lighting collections.
Delivery was another concern. Late shipments disrupted fixture assembly schedules and created pressure for their production team. For project-based lighting used in hotels, retail interiors, and commercial spaces, delay risks could quickly turn into additional costs.
MULLAN needed a glass supplier that could control the details: thread precision, glass clarity, surface finish, color matching, and batch delivery.


Our Solution
BO-Glass developed a custom high-borosilicate glass bulb shell solution based on MULLAN’s fixture requirements, assembly process, and approved design samples.
Precision Thread Control
The thread was one of the most important parts of the project. A bulb shell may look simple, but if the thread does not match the socket correctly, the entire fixture becomes difficult to assemble.
We used precision-machined molds and inline dimensional sampling to control the thread size during production. The thread tolerance was controlled within ±0.1 mm to help each shell screw on smoothly without jamming, loosening, or wobbling.
This gave MULLAN a more stable assembly process and reduced the risk of rejected parts caused by poor fit.
Clean High-Borosilicate Glass Forming
The bulb shells were made from high-borosilicate glass, selected for heat resistance, clarity, durability, and long-term stability in lighting applications.
To reduce bubbles, impurities, and visible defects, we used high-purity borosilicate raw material and stricter forming control. During production, we focused on glass cleanliness, stable forming temperature, and consistent wall quality.
Each batch was inspected not only in normal light, but also under illumination. This helped us identify defects that might only become visible after the bulb shell was installed and lit.
Soft Light Diffusion
MULLAN needed the glass shells to improve the light, not simply cover the LED source.
For this, we applied a sandblasted diffusion finish directly onto the glass surface. The sandblasted process helped soften the light, reduce glare, and create a warmer visual effect.
For applications that required stronger hotspot control, we also produced white coated finishes. The coating helped reduce direct brightness from the LED source and created a smoother, more comfortable lighting effect.


Stable Color Matching
Color consistency was one of MULLAN’s biggest concerns, so we created approved master samples for each required finish before mass production.
For white, amber, red, blue, and other custom colors, we controlled coating thickness, curing temperature, surface preparation, and final inspection standards. Production batches were compared against the approved samples before shipment.
This helped keep the final appearance closer to MULLAN’s design standard and reduced the risk of color differences between samples and bulk orders.
Decorative Surface Finishing
Besides standard sandblasted and coated finishes, MULLAN also required decorative surface effects for selected lighting collections.
Instead of using decals or labels that could peel over time, we applied sandblasted patterns directly onto the glass surface. This created a more durable decorative finish and helped preserve the premium look of the fixture.
No cheap paint. No peeling labels. No unstable decoration. Just clean, reliable glass finishing designed for long-term use.
Controlled Lead Time
Because MULLAN’s lighting projects depended on stable assembly schedules, delivery control was also part of the solution.
We planned production by batch priority, reserved finishing capacity for repeat orders, and checked progress at each production stage. This helped reduce delivery risks and gave MULLAN a more predictable supply of custom glass bulb shells.

The threads fitted smoothly during assembly. The glass looked cleaner when illuminated. Sandblasted and white coated finishes helped create softer light with fewer visible hotspots. Custom colors became more stable across batches. Delivery became easier to plan, reducing pressure on their fixture assembly schedule.
