Large Jade-White Glass Shades for Flush-Mount Ceiling Lights

Large hand-blown glass is not just a bigger version of small glass.

For high-end flush-mount ceiling lights, the glass shade has to do several jobs at once. It must hide the LED source, diffuse the light evenly, sit flat against the fixture, keep a soft jade-white appearance, and look flawless in a hotel lobby, office atrium, or premium interior space.

That was the challenge a lighting company from the United States brought to BO-Glass.

They needed a large jade-white glass shade, 500 mm in diameter, shallow and flat like a wide dish, with a large bottom opening. The shade was designed for a premium flush-mount ceiling fixture, where uneven color, wobbling, visible LED spots, or poor flatness would immediately affect the final product.

The first order was 150 pieces. Not huge for automated production, but large enough that the process had to be repeatable.

The Challenge

A 500 mm hand-blown glass shade is difficult because the size changes everything.

The glass gather alone can weigh 3-4 kg. One glassblower cannot safely control that much molten glass alone, so the process requires a skilled two-person team.

The shape also makes the project harder. A tall shade is easier to expand upward, but a shallow wide shade wants to sag under gravity. As the glass expands outward, the team has to keep it rotating, balanced, and flat.

The large opening added another risk. The bottom opening was around 300 mm, which meant a large section had to be cut away after forming. Cutting a big opening into a thin glass shell without cracking it required careful heat control and steady handling.

The jade-white material was beautiful but sensitive. It diffused light softly and hid the LED source, but it was stiffer than clear glass and had a narrower working range. If the glass was too hot, cloudy patches could appear. If it was too cool, it would not fill the mould properly.

The client needed a supplier who could handle size, shape, material, color consistency, flatness, and repeatability all at the same time.

Our Solution

BO-Glass developed a hand-blown large-format jade-white glass shade process using a two-person blowing team, adjusted furnace settings, spin mould forming, lathe cutting, fire polishing, long annealing, and strict inspection.

Instead of treating the shade as a normal lampshade, we treated it as a large optical and decorative glass component where shape, color, and light diffusion all had to be controlled.

Jade-White Opal Glass for Soft Diffusion

The client wanted a soft milky white appearance, also known as jade-white or opalescent glass.

This material hides the LED chips and creates a warm, even glow. For flush-mount ceiling lights, that is important because the viewer often sees the shade directly from below.

BO-Glass adjusted the furnace temperature about 30°C higher than our standard clear-glass setting to improve workability. The material had to be shaped quickly because jade-white glass stiffens faster than clear glass.

This is one of the reasons large jade-white shades require experienced glassblowers. The working window is short, and the color must remain even.

Two-Person Hand-Blown Forming

We assigned an experienced two-person glassblowing team to the project.

The senior glassblower gathered a large mass of molten jade-white glass from the furnace, while the assistant helped keep the blowpipe rotating and supported the weight.

The first small bubble was created by blowing into the glass, then the piece was reheated and expanded gradually.

As the shade grew larger, the assistant used a wooden block to help push the sides outward and keep the shape symmetrical.

This step required steady breath control, rhythm, and coordination. If the glass expanded too quickly, the center could become too thin. If it expanded too slowly, the piece might not reach the full diameter.

Spin Mould for the Shallow Flat Shape

Once the glass reached around 400 mm, it was transferred into a large shallow spin mould.

The mould helped define the final flat, wide profile. The glassblower continued expanding the shade into the mould, while the assistant used a steel tool to keep the center flat while the glass was still soft.

This process helped control the final shape better than free blowing alone.

For a flush-mount ceiling fixture, flatness matters because the shade must sit neatly against the fixture without wobbling or leaving an uneven gap.

Large Opening Cutting and Fire Polishing

After the shade cooled to a workable temperature, it was transferred to a lathe.

Using a small torch and carbide cutter, we cut the large bottom opening. The cut edge was then fire-polished to make it smooth and safe.

This step was delicate because the shell was wide and relatively shallow. Uneven heating or excessive force could crack the shade.

BO-Glass handled the opening as both a functional and visual detail. The edge had to be safe, clean, and consistent.

Extended Annealing for Large Glass

The first test run showed that annealing was one of the biggest risks.

Three out of five early samples cracked during cooling because the ramp-down rate was too fast. For a 500 mm shade, the center and edge cool at different speeds, creating stress.

BO-Glass extended the annealing cycle from 8 hours to 12 hours, slowly cooling the shade from 560°C to room temperature.

After this adjustment, the cracking problem stopped.

For large hand-blown glass, annealing is not just a finishing step. It is essential to product survival.

Color and Dimensional Inspection

Each shade was checked for size, flatness, wall thickness, and color consistency.

Diameter was measured at four points around the rim. The required tolerance was ±3 mm.

Flatness was checked on a granite surface plate.

The shade had to sit within 2 mm of flat so the ceiling fixture would mount properly.

Wall thickness was measured at five points using an ultrasonic thickness gauge. After early adjustments, BO-Glass reduced wall thickness variation from 0.8 mm to about 0.4 mm.

Color was compared against a master sample under daylight and warm light. Any visible streak, swirl, or cloudy patch was rejected.

We also performed thermal shock testing on one sample from each batch by heating it to 80°C and plunging it into 20°C water. No cracks or crazing were allowed.

The Result

The first full batch of 150 shades was successfully delivered.

The client sent a video of the shade mounted on their ceiling fixture. The light was warm, even, and free from visible dark spots or color shifts.

The client wrote that this was exactly what they had been looking for, and that they had spent two years trying to find a supplier who could make this type of large shade.

After the first batch, they placed two repeat orders and introduced the product to their European branch.

BO-Glass is now developing a 600 mm version for a luxury hotel project. It will be even more difficult, but the process knowledge from the 500 mm shade gives us a strong foundation.

For the client, the project solved a difficult design problem: a large, shallow, jade-white glass shade that looked premium and mounted correctly.
