Custom Screw-Thread Glass Covers for Outdoor Wall Lights
For outdoor lighting, a beautiful glass cover still has to keep the rain out.

Wall lights used outside homes, hotels, restaurants, and garden entrances need more than a decorative shade. The glass cover has to protect the bulb and electronics, diffuse the light softly, match the fixture style, and seal properly against rain, frost, humidity, UV exposure, and coastal air.
That was the problem this outdoor lighting brand brought to BO-Glass.
Their previous suppliers could make attractive glass covers, but the screw threads were inconsistent. Some covers were too tight and cracked during assembly. Others were too loose, allowing water to enter the fixture during heavy rain.
The client needed glass covers that looked premium, screwed onto the metal base smoothly, compressed the gasket evenly, and protected the light from outdoor weather.
Custom Screw-Thread Glass Covers for Outdoor Wall Lights
The Challenge
The product was a screw-thread glass cover for outdoor wall light fixtures.
The cover was usually around 85-150 mm in diameter, with a threaded opening at the bottom. It twisted directly onto a metal base that held the LED or CFL bulb.
The glass had three jobs: protect the light source, diffuse the light, and seal the fixture.
The thread was the most difficult part. It was not a standard pipe thread. It was a custom pitch designed for the client’s own metal base.
The glass needed the correct inner diameter, correct thread pitch, smooth spiral profile, and stable rim surface. If the thread had a bump, flat area, or dimensional drift, the rubber gasket would not compress evenly and water could enter the fixture.
Outdoor use made the requirements even stricter. The cover had to withstand rain, frost, sunlight, salt air, impact, and temperature changes.
At the same time, the product had to look good because outdoor wall lights are part of the building’s first impression.
The client needed both function and appearance. BO-Glass had to solve the fit problem without losing the visual quality of the glass cover.

Our Solution
BO-Glass developed a hand-blown screw-thread glass cover solution using custom graphite mandrels, controlled threading, fire-polished sealing rims, annealing, water testing, and multiple decorative finish options.
Instead of treating the thread as a rough handmade detail, we treated it as the key performance feature of the product.
Hand-Blown Glass Forming
Each cover was hand-blown on a glassblowing lathe.
The body was first formed to the required shape using a wooden mould and compressed air. This gave the cover its rounded form and allowed the wall thickness to stay suitable for outdoor use.
Hand forming gave BO-Glass the flexibility to produce different cover sizes and styles without forcing the client into large automated production quantities.
This was important because the client ordered different models in small-to-medium batches.
Custom Graphite Thread Mandrel
The screw thread was formed using a custom graphite mandrel.
While the glass was still hot, around 700°C, the cover was transferred to a second station. The glassblower gently rotated the opening onto the threaded graphite mandrel, allowing the hot glass to take the exact thread profile.
Graphite was chosen because it releases well from hot glass and can form a clean, continuous thread.
The most important part was timing. If the glass was too hot, the thread became shallow. If it was too cool, the glass did not flow fully into the thread and gaps could appear.
BO-Glass relied on experienced glassblowers who could judge the glass temperature by its glow and adjust the process by hand.
Fit Testing with Actual Metal Bases
To control thread consistency, we kept a template metal base from the client at the workstation.
Every tenth cover was test-fitted onto the actual fixture base to confirm that the thread screwed on smoothly and matched the pitch correctly.
This helped us detect small process drift before it became a batch problem.
For BO-Glass, screw-thread glass is not finished until it fits the customer’s real hardware.

Fire-Polished Sealing Rim
Even a good thread cannot seal properly if the rim is uneven.
After threading, the opening was fire-polished to create a smooth and even sealing surface. This allowed the rubber gasket to compress uniformly when the cover was screwed onto the base.
The cover was then annealed slowly to remove internal stress and reduce the risk of warping or cracking over time.
This step helped protect the long-term seal and improved reliability in outdoor conditions.
Water-Sealing Test
BO-Glass tested sealing performance on samples from each batch.
The cover was mounted onto a base with a gasket, filled with water, and left upside down for 24 hours. If any water leaked, the batch was reviewed and reworked.
The rejection rate stayed under 2%, and most issues were caught before shipment.
This gave the client confidence that the covers would protect the fixture in real rain, not just look correct on a drawing.
Material and Finish Options
The client needed different looks for different lighting collections, so BO-Glass offered several glass finish options.
Jade-white glass, also called milky white or opal glass, created a soft, elegant glow and hid the bulb completely. It was suitable for traditional, coastal, and hospitality lighting styles.
Clear glass with ceramic spray tint allowed amber, smoke grey, pale blue, and other colors. The tint was baked into the glass surface so it would not fade or peel easily.
Sandblasted clear glass created a uniform matte surface with a more modern appearance. It also diffused light evenly without strong color shift.
The client selected jade-white and sandblasted clear glass for their main models, and later ordered amber-tinted covers for a hotel project.

The Result
BO-Glass delivered the first 200 screw-thread glass covers in a mix of jade-white and sandblasted finishes.
The client tested the covers on a wall light fixture with a hose spraying water directly onto it for 48 hours. The light stayed dry inside and continued working.
After that first success, the client placed four more orders, each around 1,000 to 3,000 pieces.
They also introduced BO-Glass covers to their European distributor, who later became a direct customer.
The distributor told us that after years of buying glass covers from China, our screw threads were among the most consistent they had seen.
For the client, the project solved a practical outdoor lighting problem: the cover finally looked good, screwed on properly, and kept water out.
