Custom Glass Match Holders for Premium Home Décor

A simple object can still become a statement piece.

That was the idea behind this project. A UK home décor brand came to BO-Glass with a clear creative goal: they wanted a crystal-clear glass match holder that looked decorative, felt premium, and included a functional striking strip on the side.

The product needed to combine transparency, strength, customization, and reliable everyday use.

For BO-Glass, this was exactly the kind of project where glass craftsmanship and practical product engineering had to work together.

The Challenge

The matches were extra-long, around 10 cm, with colorful heads in red, blue, green, and other colors. The glass container had to be clear enough to display them beautifully, without bubbles, green tint, or cloudy areas.

The striking strip was another key challenge. It had to be attached to a curved glass surface and remain firmly in place after repeated use. If the strip peeled, wrinkled, or formed air bubbles, the product would feel cheap and unreliable.

The client also wanted multiple decorative versions. Some jars needed a smooth glossy finish. Some needed vertical fluted ridges. Others required a mirror-like metallic finish in colors such as gold, copper, gunmetal, or rose gold.

Each finish created its own production difficulty. The mirror finish, for example, required a very clean and smooth surface because even tiny scratches would become highly visible.

Fit was also important. The inner diameter had to allow the long matches to stand upright without falling over, while still making them easy to remove. For a hand-finished decorative glass item, controlling the inner bore within ±0.3 mm was not simple.

The client needed a product that looked handmade and premium, but still had the consistency required for retail sales.

Our Solution

BO-Glass developed a custom high-borosilicate glass match holder solution using mould-blowing, hand finishing, fire polishing, decorative surface treatments, striker strip bonding, logo engraving, and detailed inspection.

Instead of treating it as a simple jar, we designed it as a complete home décor product: glass body, finish, striker strip, logo detail, size, color, and user experience all had to work together.

High-Borosilicate Glass for Clarity and Strength

We selected high-borosilicate glass because of its high transparency, heat resistance, and mechanical strength.

For this product, clarity was essential. The colorful matches inside were part of the visual appeal, so the glass had to avoid the green tint often seen in ordinary soda-lime glass.

High-borosilicate glass also offered better durability for shipping and daily handling. Since the match holder might sit near candles or fireplaces, heat resistance was another practical benefit.

BO-Glass chose the material not only for appearance, but for how the product would actually be used in the home.

Mould-Blown Shape with Hand Finishing

To achieve consistent shape while keeping a premium feel, we used mould-blowing combined with hand finishing.

For the smooth version, the glass was blown into a polished steel mould, then slowly annealed to remove internal stress. The rim and base were fire-polished to create a clean, silky edge.

For the fluted version, we used a mould with vertical grooves. After forming, the surface was lightly acid-etched to soften any sharp ridges and improve the hand feel.

This process allowed BO-Glass to keep the product consistent enough for retail, while still preserving the crafted appearance that premium home décor brands expect.

Mirror Metallic Finishes

For the mirror-finished versions, surface preparation was critical.

We first sandblasted the surface lightly to create a microscopic texture for better adhesion. Then we applied a thin metallic layer, such as aluminum or chrome, through vacuum deposition. Finally, a colored lacquer was added to create finishes such as gold, copper, gunmetal, and rose gold.

The rose gold version became especially popular and was selected for a holiday batch.

Reliable Striking Strip Bonding

The striking strip looked small, but it was one of the most important functional parts of the product.

We tested three adhesive systems before selecting one that bonded firmly to glass and could handle repeated striking. The strip was pre-cut to the required size, carefully applied to the curved surface with a rubber squeegee, and cured under heat for 24 hours.

To confirm durability, we tested the strip by striking matches on it 500 times consecutively. The strip stayed firmly in place and continued to perform well.

For BO-Glass, this kind of detail matters because one weak functional part can ruin the entire customer experience.

Custom Colors, Sizes, and Logo Options

The client wanted the match holder to work across different interior styles and seasonal collections.

We offered versions in clear, amber, smoky grey, and cobalt blue. The striking strip could be placed on the side for easy use or on the bottom for a cleaner visual appearance.

For branding, we engraved the logo on the base using a diamond burr and filled it with white epoxy to make it visible without being too loud.

We also developed two sizes: a small version for about 30 matches and a larger version for about 100 matches. The larger version became especially popular with boutique hotels.

BO-Glass helped the client turn one product concept into a flexible collection.

Quality Control

Every piece was inspected under a bright LED panel for bubbles, scratches, uneven color, and surface defects.

Mirror-finished pieces were checked carefully for coating consistency. We also measured the inside diameter at three heights using a telescoping gauge to make sure the matches stood properly and did not tilt excessively.

If the matches tilted more than 2 degrees, the piece was rejected.

The first production batch had a rejection rate of about 6%, mostly due to coating imperfections. After adjusting the vacuum deposition settings, we reduced the rejection rate to under 1%.

This showed the value of BO-Glass’s process control: decorative glass can look artistic, but the production still has to be measured, adjusted, and stabilized.

The Result

BO-Glass delivered 2,000 custom glass match holders in four different finishes.

The client featured them in their autumn catalogue, and the first batch sold out in three weeks. The product was reordered immediately and later became a permanent item in the client’s collection.

The larger version also became popular with boutique hotels, while several interior designers ordered customized versions with their own logos as closing gifts for home buyers.

For the client, the product proved that even a simple household item can become a premium gift when the material, finish, function, and details are handled properly.
